THE WOODLAND JOURNAL

Protect the woodland you buy.

Public liability and damage cover for trees serve different purposes. Liability cover alone does not pay to replace a stand lost to fire.

Liability: damage caused to others

Clarify the parcels, insured people and activities. Public access, hunting, works and harvesting may require specific cover. Request confirmation for the situation after purchase.

Damage: the events actually covered

Fire, storm, snow, drought, diseases and pests are not interchangeable in an insurance contract. Check each event, exclusion and option. Groupama Forêts 2025 terms provide one real contract example, not a market-wide standard.

Species, ages and stand structure change how woodland is assessed. A visit helps compare hypotheses with the trees actually present.

Lost trees and re-establishment are different needs

Depending on the policy, cover may address timber losses, clearance or replanting. Check limits, trigger thresholds, excesses and the treatment of salvage timber. Purchase price does not automatically equal insured value.

Before completing the purchase

Provide location, areas, known species and ages, and loss history to the insurance professional. Obtain written confirmation of the effective date in the buyer’s name. Compare terms, not just premiums. Sylvassur and Groupama Forêts are providers to ask; WoodWorth has no partnership with either.
